Art and haute couture: Yves Saint-Laurent is celebrated in Paris

The year begins in style with the launch of an exceptional exhibition that your Hotel Auteuil Tour Eiffel team is eager to bring to your attention! An impressive six of the main Parisian museums have joined forces to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first fashion show of Yves Saint-Laurent. From this initiative was born a major exhibition entitled Yves Saint-Laurent at the Museums. It awaits your discovery from January 29th to May 15th, 2022.

Parisian institutions in partnership

To establish this dialogue between art and haute couture, six museums have come together. The Musée Yves Saint-Laurent Paris, of course, plays a central role. But also taking part in this multi-museum event are the Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Musée d’Orsay and the Musée National Picasso de Paris. Everyone involved in this huge project took great care in establishing and highlighting links between their collections and the creations of the master couturier. A fascinating dialogue is thus established between the clothes designed by Yves Saint-Laurent and the works of the artists and writers who inspired him.

An intriguing dialogue between creators

Yves Saint-Laurent was always forthcoming about how much art in general inspired his creativity, whether it was classical works or those of his contemporaries. It was therefore quite natural to point out the parallels between his creations and those that fuelled his imagination. At the Musée Picasso, for example, you will learn about his fascination with the Catalan artist's Rose and Blue periods. The cubism that so fascinated the couturier played a role in the shapes and rhythms he adopted in his designs, helping him to push back the conventions of fashion. At the same time, the Louvre showcases the classical influences of YSL and his attraction to the play of light on gold. Thanks to the exhibition of figurines dressed in the couturier's creations, the connections appear clearly throughout the collections.

At the heart of creation

The reflection becomes more about social constructs at the Musée d'Orsay, where the exhibition questions dress codes and the divisions between the feminine and the masculine. This aspect of the Yves Saint-Laurent oeuvre echoes the work of Marcel Proust and examines the influence of the novelist on the couturier. Finally, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, through sometimes monumental and sometimes intimate sequences, focusses on the use of shapes, colours, and patterns by YSL. Yves Saint-Laurent was also a pop culture phenomenon, assimilating and transcending the norm in a game full of subtleties that the Musée d’Art Moderne playfully highlights.

Don’t miss the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Yves Saint-Laurent during your stay at the Hotel Auteuil Tour Eiffel. In addition to plunging into the visual, intellectual and aesthetic universe of the creator, you can take the opportunity to browse (again) the superb collections of the greatest Parisian museums. A great opportunity to return to the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée Picasso...
